The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a US$130 million loan for the Dominican Republic on Monday, February 6. The funds will be used to build and operate the network of highways known as 'Viadom". Repairs will be made on 199 kilometers of highway and an additional 68 kilometers will be constructed, according to an IDB press release. El Nuevo Diario says that the company that will handle this project, "Dominicana de Vias Concesionadas," will improve the highway between Santiago and Santo Domingo as well as between Santiago and the tourist areas around Puerto Plata. The program also includes the beltway around Santiago and a highway that connects Santo Domingo with the southwestern cities of San Cristobal and Bani.
