Higher fuel prices have forced Dominican consumers to reduce their use of gasoline and diesel fuels. In absolute terms, according to Diario Libre, the country consumed 55 million fewer gallons in 2011 in comparison with the previous year. Most affected was the industrial free zone sector, which went from 5.8 million gallons of tax free fuel used in 2010 to just 1.4 million gallons in 2011. Consumption of regular gasoline fell by 8.6 million gallons, and even LPG fell off by 31.2 million gallons. Premium gasoline consumption dropped by 4 million gallons. So far this year, just one month and six days, the price of premium gasoline has increased by RD$8 and the price of diesel by RD$6.50.
