The Dominican Republic has fallen to the fourteenth spot in the Americas on the competitiveness index of trips and tourism. The DR is now behind Puerto Rico and Peru, according to Frank Elias Rainieri, director of the Puntacana Group. According to Hoy newspaper, Rainieri said that although the tourism market in the Dominican Republic has developed in an extraordinary manner over the last few years, reaching a balance between mass tourism and high-level travel, there are still some deficiencies that need to be corrected in order to be more competitive. In an interview in the January edition of "Management and Competitiveness," a magazine that specializes in economic issues, Rainieri pointed out that slum clearance in tourist areas, the creation of places of entertainment and the construction of essential infrastructure like aqueducts, water treatment plants, electricity and highways were crucial to the tourist industry.

"This will ensure that tourists keep visiting our country for many years. And another critical point that assures a better position of the country is the training of our human resources so that they have improved language skills and are better prepared for a higher quality of tourism," said Rainieri. He said that the tourists who are coming to the country are more demanding of improved infrastructure and services.
