The Pardons Commission has received hundreds of case files of people hoping to be granted Independence Day pardons on 27 February, and to be set free. Most of the requests have come from prisoners in Najayo. Yesterday, Monday February 6, Attorney General Radhames Jimenez Pena reiterated that there would be pardons this month but added that all would depend on the Commission's recommendations.

"This is being handled by the National Prison Board, which is coordinated by the Cardinal (Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez), and which created a commission and the commission is chaired by Fray Aristides Jimenez Richardson and they are the ones that are going to evaluate who qualifies or not," commented Jimenez Pena. Up until now, the commission has met on three occasions to assess the case files, and according to information provided, the cases will be made public so that the population will know who is being favored or not and the reasons for the decisions.

The cases reach the commission both through individuals as well as from those affected and the criteria that will be applied by the commission members include cases of terminal illness, potentially contagious diseases, indigent prisoners, and cases in which citizen consciousness or the public peace have not been lacerated. There are also some cases in which the person has a definitive sentence and when they request their freedom due to health issues there is a medical certificate to confirm the condition. Jimenez Richardson, as the coordinator of the Commission, was appointed official spokesman for the work on the evaluations of the case files.
