The Dominican Republic Industrial Association (AIRD), the Confederation of Small and Medium Companies and the Industrial Association of Herrera and the Province of Santo Domingo (AEIH) have expressed their rejection of the import of building materials for the construction of the aqueduct in the province of Peravia. Hoy newspaper says that Spanish company Abi-Karam Morilla Ingenieros Arquitectos, S.A. are importing PVC pipes and other products that can be manufactured here. AEIH president Wadi Cano says that the association is against public works projects that use imported materials that can be supplied by local manufacturers. He said that one of the government's priorities should be to protect local industries. He noted that Odebrecht saved 40% on the cost of materials when it was convinced that local manufacturers could supply its requirements for the Samana aqueduct. Hoy says that the Spanish constructor has purchased and imported nearly 1000 tons of re-bar for the Peravia aqueduct and is also proposing to import the PVC tubing.
