Speaking during a visit to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) yesterday, Thursday February 9, United States ambassador Raul Yzaguirre revealed that his government has decided to reduce economic support for the Dominican Republic in the fight against drug trafficking, and the problem will therefore have to be tackled more efficiently and with greater dedication. Diario Libre quotes the ambassador as saying that both countries wanted to stop the flow of drugs and the US government was very pleased with the cooperation it had received from the Dominican Republic.
Last week the Dominican ambassador in Washington, Anibal de Castro, said that the US government should take on greater responsibility in the fight against drugs and increase the funds to fight this problem in the Caribbean, as it was a shared concern.
Last year the US government provided US$73 million to the Security Initiative for the Caribbean Area and a similar figure will be requested for this year.
According to data given to the press, the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) confiscated more than 6,862 kilos of various types of drugs last year and this year arrests and confiscations have been steady.
The DNCD pays out more than RD$60 million in one year just to pay informants.
On 16 January DNCD chief Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo revealed that the new cartels preferred sending the drugs to Europe as the United States authorities had stepped up security.
