Listin Diario reports that the Barcelo group has asked the President of the Republic and the president of the Supreme Court of Justice to ensure that justice is served after a court in La Altagracia province sentenced the main executives of the Barcelo tourist complex to five years in prison.
The Barcelo Group issued a public statement saying that the court's decision was related to a property rental dispute in the complex that led to a writ for robbery asking for remand and exit bans, and concluded with a sentence for supposed aggravated burglary.
The sentence was handed down on 23 November 2011, the same date as the British ambassador to the DR went public with a declaration about problems experienced by foreign investors in the country due to lack of confidence in the judiciary.
The sentence is to be appealed in San Pedro de Macoris but the Barcelo group says it has no faith in it being impartial.
The Barcelo group and the defendants have complained in the past to the former president of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Attorney General concerning the irregularities of the investigation. They said that they regretted having to issue this statement but they felt totally helpless in the face of this injustice.
The Spanish group stated that they have invested US$250 million in renovating and improving their hotels over the last few years and that they are one of the pioneering groups in the tourist development of the country, which has created thousands of jobs.
