Thursday February 9 was the 46th anniversary of a massacre that took place in 1966 when several high school and university students were beaten during a protest demanding improvements in the education system in the Dominican Republic. Amelia Ricart Calventi, Antonio Santos Mendez, Miguel Tolentino and Luis Jimenez were killed and others were wounded.

The event was commemorated by the Permanent Committee of 9 February in front of the National Palace and included the rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Mateo Aquino Febrillet and Senator Cristina Lizardo as well as several teachers and students from Amelia Ricart school, who held placards demanding 4% for education and asked that the massacre not be repeated.

Benito Fernandez, a member of the 9 February committee and witness to the massacre declared that his friends had not died in vain as they succeeded in obtaining recognition of the UASD Movement for Change, made up of students who campaign for improving education.

Febrillet thanked this movement created by students, which was recognized by the UASD authorities as being responsible for persuading the government to hand over the budget assigned to the university. He said that the UASD was an open and democratic university where young people had the opportunity to study, as reported in Listin Diario.
