On Wednesday night, February 8, a black SUV drove at high speed along the Avenida Circunvalacion Sur in Santiago, and one of its occupants threw a bag full of RD$2,000 bills out of the window. The bag split open when it hit the pavement and the money scattered everywhere. This resulted in a frantic competition to grab the money by the residents in the area, drivers and motorcyclists. The crowd snowballed as passers-by saw the money and there were some skirmishes as people tried to grab the money from those who had picked it up.
People were still combing the area on Thursday morning. Witnesses said that the SUV was being followed by the police, as reported in El Nacional.
