According to the Director of Environmental Protection at the Environment Ministry, Francisco Flores Chang, the Dominican population produces 7,200 tons of garbage every day, which is handled 'more or less correctly'.
The garbage is deposited in 368 open-air dumps throughout the country.
Flores was presenting two environmental management guides by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Environment Ministry.
The guides for the Management of the Municipal Environment contain guidelines for the management of the services provided by the municipality, outlining the procedures that regulate each activity in the markets and slaughterhouses.
An agreement has been reached with the municipal authorities to clean up 30 dumps initially and then to extend it to the rest, said Flores. He added that projects to improve the Duquesa dump in Santo Domingo North, Haina and the landfill site in Santiago were already under way, as reported in Listin Diario.
