Members of the National Police and other state security organizations arrested businessman Jose Rafael Fermin (Loco Fermin) on Friday February 10 in Santiago. Fermin is one of the main investors in PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia's campaign, as well as another three members of the opposition party, according to Listin Diario.

According to his lawyer, Mito Nunez, Fermin was taken to the capital where he was released as there was no formal charge against him.

Several other party activists were also arrested in raids, including Miguel Rosario, PRD coordinator for the West 1 region, Pedro Benjamin de la Cruz, president of the Motoconchista Organization of Santiago, and another party member whose name was not revealed. A further two PRD activists were arrested but later released.

The PRD press and publicity coordinator in Santiago, Adriano de la Rosa, described the arrests as suspicious and questionable, pointing out that they took place at the exact same time as the raids targeting journalist Guillermo Gomez in the capital.

He said that he did not know the reason behind the detentions or what was being investigated. The Central Cibao branch of the National Police, via their PR department only said that the Public Prosecutor would give details of the case.
