Diario Libre reports that the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) is ordering an investigation into the sentence of main executives of the Spanish group Barcelo in Punta Cana to five years in jail, accused of theft by a construction company.

SCJ president Mariano German Mejia ordered the measure on Sunday February 12, after the hotel chain publicly asked the Supreme Court, together with President Leonel Fernandez, for help in settling the matter.

Last November, a court in La Altagracia province sentenced Pedro Linares, Jose Torres Escandell, Juan Marques Morera, Rafael Cedano Jimenez, Adrian Mercedes and Jose Gonzalez Mata, executives of the Spanish company, to five years in jail, convicted of aggravated robbery and criminal association.

This was after the constructor Lopez Carias, represented by Pedro Sepulveda, had complained that they had stolen certain merchandise that he was keeping in a property rented from Hotel Bavaro in the Barcelo complex in Punta Cana.

The defense for the Spanish group said that the rental contract had terminated and the construction company also owed them money, so they exercised their legal right to request the keys and the vacation of the premises as stated in the contract. They also confirmed that the goods and merchandise were placed at the disposition of the constructor but he did not collect them and started the legal process.
