Levels of respect for the rights of children and young people in the Dominican Republic are 'poor' according to a study carried out by the Observatory of the Rights of Children and Young People (ODNA).
The study showed that the province of Bahoruco has the highest level of infant mortality in the country with 60 deaths per 1000 live births, followed by La Romana and Monte Cristi with 49 deaths per 100 live births. It also showed that 22.7% of children under the age of five suffers from chronic malnutrition at national level.
In the province of Santo Domingo the infant mortality rate was 42 per 100 live births and 8.7% of children under five suffered from chronic malnutrition.
Commenting on the shocking figures, Dr. Angel Almanzar, a member of the consultative council of ODNA, said that in his opinion, it was due to a lack of policies for solving the country's problems.
Illiteracy amongst women aged 15 to 49 was highest in Elias Pina with 29.7%, Bahoruco with 26.9 percent and Pedernales and Independencia with 20.1% and 21.6% respectively. The National District had the lowest rate with 4.6%, as reported in Listin Diario.
