The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources says that its office in the municipality of Villa Altagracia was set on fire by persons unknown on Sunday night, 12 February, and asked National Police Chief, Jose Armando Polanco Gomez, to order an investigation into the incident. Environment Minister Ernesto Reyna Alcantara visited the site, given the severity of the event, and instructed the National Environmental Protection Service (SENPA) to investigate the incident with the aim of bringing the arsonists to justice.
Reyna Alcantara expressed his dismay over the criminal acts, saying that nothing and nobody would stop their work for the protection and conservation of the country's natural resources. He said he was confident that the police authorities would soon find and prosecute whoever was responsible. The fire also endangered the life of the people who worked there, said Reyna.
