The accusations by the PRD presidential candidate, Hipolito Mejia, who said that military commanders are carrying out campaign duties in favor of the government's PLD candidate, drew reactions yesterday Monday February 13 from the Minister of the Armed Forces and the ruling PLD party. In a statement, Lieutenant General Joaquin Virgilio Perez Feliz said that, "the role that the Constitution of the Republic grants (the Armed Forces) as an institution is one that is essentially obedient to the civil power, apolitical, and without the authority in any case to deliberate."

He stated that the Armed Forces are completely compliant with the dispositions of the Constitution. "His Excellency the Constitutional President of the Republic, Leonel Antonio Fernandez Reyna, the Supreme Authority of the Armed Forces and the National Police, has always defended the role that the military plays in the strengthening of the democratic system, consolidating its status as apolitical and non-deliberative," he said. In the meantime, the PLD general secretary, Reinaldo Pared Perez, attributed the accusation by the opposition candidate to the loser syndrome. "Danilo would never accept military and police personnel being involved in his election campaign. We categorically reject the accusation by the PPH," he said.
