David Ortiz and the Boston Red Sox avoided arbitration hearings and reached a deal that will pay the powerful designated hitter more than US$14.5 million for the 2012 season. This means that if Ortiz has one of his normal years, each homerun will be costing Boston about US$420,000. Ortiz said that he was happy, since he did not want to leave the team where he is one of the few remaining players from the World Series Champions or 2004 and 2007. The 36-year old designated hitter, who has been with Boston for ten years, says that he has been working out in the off-season in order to be in good shape when training camp opens in a few days. Boston has not been taken to arbitration for ten years, always reaching an agreement with its players. Ortiz had asked for US$16.5 million and Boston had offered US$12.65 million. Most people will agree that the final deal was sufficient.
