Markus Werner Rauh, a 32-year old German, was on the run, having escaped from prison in Germany whilst serving a sentence for drug trafficking. He was captured in Luperon, near Puerto Plata when buying cocaine, by members of the Criminal Investigation Department (Dicrim) attached to Interpol, and the National Drugs Control Unit (DNCD).
He had served one year of his sentence in Germany, but was selling drugs to the inmates and after escaping and taking refuge in the Dominican Republic he continued to be involved in the drug trade.
The police Public Relations office stated that he would shortly be deported to Germany.
Over the last few months, the Interpol office in Santo Domingo has been notable for the increased number of international criminals it has arrested and repatriated to their countries. In circulars affiliated to security organizations it is said that the Interpol office in Santo Domingo is one of the most efficient on the continent.
In a little more than a year a total of 85 foreigners have been deported for breaking the migration and drug laws, including several who were living here and were being sought after by the authorities in their own countries.
