The president of the Dominican Seismology and Seismic Engineering Society (Sodosismica), Leonardo Reyes Madera, insisted yesterday Monday February 20 on the need for the country to conduct structural surveys of schools and hospitals in order to assess whether they have problems that could cause them to collapse during an earthquake. According to the expert, the problem with the schools and hospitals is that they were not designed for seismic areas and until very recently a seismic survey was not required for their construction. "This does not mean that they are poorly built, what it means to say is that most of them were constructed outside the seismic regulations," he said. Reyes Madera was interviewed at UNIBE University during the announcement of the celebration of an "International Workshop on Professional Architectural Practices" which is being held at the university from 20-28 February, with Japanese experts as the invited guests.
