SJC orders investigation of discharge in drug case

Chief Justice Mariano German Mejia has ordered an investigation into the decision to release four Venezuelans who had been sentenced after being caught in possession of 58 packages of cocaine. According to El Nuevo Diario the Collegiate Court of San Pedro de Macoris dismissed the case for "lack of evidence." Meanwhile, Attorney General Radhames Jimenez Pena has instructed the local District Attorney to file an appeal of the sentence handed down by the court. Jimenez Pena said that the Justice Department was standing firm in its request for a 30-year sentence for the drug traffickers.
