The Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital registered 296 births last year to girls between the ages of 10 and 15 and over 2,000 births to girls under 19 years of age. The Dominican Republic occupies the fifth highest place among Latin American countries in adolescent pregnancies, a situation that leads to greater poverty for families, higher school drop out rates, increased costs and more health risks.

Dominican Obstetrics and Gynecology Society president Ruddy Guerrero listed these consequences and called for the Ministries of Public Health and Education to implement prevention and education programs in order to prevent these pregnancies. He said that of every 1,000 pregnancies, nearly 10% (92 girls) were teenagers, a very high rate. Only Bolivia, Haiti, and El Salvador score higher on this negative scale.

Maternity hospitals like La Altagracia, the Materno-Infantil of San Lorenzo de Los Mina are testament to this sad situation. Santo Domingo's Luis Eduardo Aybar Hospital registered over 2,300 births to mothers between the ages of 10 and 19, according to Dr. Julio Manuel Rodriguez Grullon.
