View Full Version : Nine pardons are recommended out of 916 requests received

The Pardons Commission, headed by Brother Aristides Jimenez Richardson, has recommended nine inmates for pardon to President Leonel Fernandez out of 916 requests. Of the nine recommended, one died yesterday.

Those recommended are:

Cesar Rafael Acosta Beato, La Victoria jail, serving a 20-year sentence for murder, has been in jail for four years and two months. He has cancer of the colon.

Ramon Maria Rondon Pena, aged 67, La Victoria jail, served two years and two months and is suffering from diabetes and vascular failure.

Bienvenido Leyba Vargas, jailed in La Victoria for murder, sentenced to 20 years and has served eight. Suffering from severe vascular failure.

Francisco Salazar Hernandez, Najayo jail. Sent to jail for 15 years and has served seven years and two months. He has had several strokes and suffers from high blood pressure.

Salvador Plasencia Hernandez, jailed for two and a half years for fraud. He has AIDS and throat cancer. He is in jail in Cotui and is only a month short from completing his sentence.

Juan Valdez Jerez, aged 74, sentenced to 10 years and has completed half. He is diabetic and has kidney problems, asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.

Gerard Dios Evangelista Contreras, Puerto Plata jail, in prison for aggravated burglary, and has been in jail for 10 years and 10 months. He has psychiatric problems.

Daniel Marcelo Celedonio, aged 44, was sentenced to ten years for rape and has completed his sentence. However he will not be released until he pays the fine of RD$100,000 which was imposed.

The Commission rejected a request for pardons for a group of Colombians, in jail for drug trafficking, despite a petition from the Colombian embassy.

Luis Alberto Jean, a 57-year old Haitian was also pardoned but died on Wednesday

Friar Aristide Jimenez Richardson said that there are around 100 inmates who are terminally ill in jails around the country but the commission did not have time to evaluate them all, and he recommended them for consideration in August when the Commission meets again.
