Most self-employed workers have higher incomes than salaried workers in the formal or informal sectors of the economy, according to a recent study on Poverty in the Dominican Republic released by the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. The report in Hoy says that this is true, despite the fact that the nature of self-employment leads most to assume that these workers should earn less than their salaried counterparts. Accordingly, the self-employed appear to be better able to put a value on their efforts in the labor market. A possible explanation for this is that self-employed workers are entrepreneurs, and their initiative and capital generate additional value. With the exception of workers at the very lowest pay levels, the self-employed, according to the study, earned appreciably more than salaried workers in the formal or informal sectors.
