Yesterday President Leonel Fernandez was able to keep his promise to take the first test ride on the second line of the Santo Domingo metro on 27 February. The line begins at Kilometer 9 of the Duarte Highway and continues on until the bridge on Padre Castellanos Avenue (Puente de la 17). After finishing his State of the Nation address to the National Assembly in the Congress building, the President boarded the first metro line at the Centro de los Heroes station, and rode it to the John F. Kennedy Avenue, where he transferred to the new line. Fernandez then drove the metro eastwards as far as the Ramon Caceres station and then went west to the beginning of the second metro line.

But before starting, the President handed the controls to First Lady Margarita Cedeno who was accompanying him, and announced over the PA system: "Not only have I passed the torch, I have given her the helm!" The First Lady is the PLD party presidential candidate's Danilo Medina's running mate.

The first half of the second line of the metro is expected to be fully operational by the end of this year and will run for 11 kms from the points known as Km. 9 of the Duarte Highway (a major bus transfer station) to the Puente de la 17. The subway will connect to the first line of the metro at the Maximo Gomez station.

The Fernandez administration says it is up to the next government that begins 16 August 2012 to continue construction works to extend it to Los Alcarrizos in the north and San Luis in the east, completing its planned 22 km route.
