After sifting through nearly 1,000 case files, the Pardons Commission recommended just nine prisoners for a pardon and at the Attorney General's recommendation, President Leonel Fernandez granted just six. On Monday the Executive Branch granted pardons to six inmates who were being held in several jails around the country. By means of Decree 65-12, the following were pardoned: Juan Valdes Jerez, Salvador Plasencia Hernandez, Francisco Salazar Hernandez, Bienvenido Leyba Vargas, Daniel Celedonio Marcelo and Yerar Dios Evangelista Contreras. These men were pardoned of the time remaining of their sentences, according to the President's website.

"The benefit of a pardon, for the time remaining of the sentences to be completed in the prisons where these people are being held is granted, effective 27 February 2012," says Article one of the Decree. And in Article two of the government measure, it says that: "The people benefitted by the pardon granted by this decree are warned that if before the completion of the term of their sentences, in the judgment of the Attorney General of the Republic, they commit acts of bad conduct, so demonstrating that they are not worthy of the generous measure which so favors them, they will return once again to the corresponding penitentiary establishments by order of said official, where they will remain until they server out their sentences, considering themselves to not have been pardoned".
