Environment Minister Ernesto Reyna and Navy Chief Rear Admiral Nicolas Cabrera Arias said yesterday Tuesday 28 February that certain sectors of the country have been misinformed about the supposed plan to build a US naval base on Saona Island.

Reyna said that the project would involve remodeling the existing Mano Juan and Catuano Navy facilities, with the construction of a jetty for boats patrolling the area to come and go easily. Arias said that once the construction is finished at least a dozen Dominican navy personnel would be stationed there and not US personnel as is rumored.

Reyna and Cabrera said that the military post in Catuano needed remodeling as it dates back to the 1960s and that very little improvement work has been done since then. It only has a kitchen and a bathroom and one bedroom for the guards. They confirmed that all they are looking for is an improvement in the quality of life of the soldiers, to improve the installations and provide better service.

He reported that Taiwan, Japan and Germany would also be making contributions to improve environmental conditions.

An estimated 1,000 tourists visit the island every day, arriving on board 40 to 50 boats.
