A prominent Santiago lawyer, Jose Miguel Minier, held an impromptu press conference yesterday Tuesday February 28 at the Palace of Justice in Santiago. He said that Marcos Martinez had told him that a high-level PRD committee had given him the documents with details of a supposed bank account in euros in the name of the First Lady, Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez.

Minier, a former president of Santiago Lawyers Association, called Martinez, who he describes as a personal friend and colleague and advised him to find the courage to retract his statements and denounce whoever gave him the false documents.

The General Directorate of Denmark's Financial Supervising Authority reported to the Superintendent of Banks of the Dominican Republic that the First Lady and PLD vice-presidential candidate, Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez, is not a client of the Danske Bank, as covered in press reports on 23 February. The Danish financial authorities were responding to a request from the Dominican Republic's Superintendent of Banks, Haivanjoe Ng Cortinas, dated 20 February, to Ulrik Nodgaard, the director of the Danish banking supervisory agency, for confirmation whether Cedeno was a client of the bank concerned.

According to Minier, Marcos Martinez, who did not go to work on his program Diario 55 yesterday, should not just wait for a judge to send him to 3 to 10 years in jail.

The lawyer revealed that Martinez told him that when they handed him the documents he had asked why they did not give them to journalist Juan TH, and they said they preferred the announcement about the documents to be made in Santiago.

However, Minier said that he did not wish to reveal the name of the person who called Martinez, saying that he was not his lawyer and had no authorization to do so, but that he hoped that Martinez would find the courage to announce the name tomorrow, Wednesday, because no one in this country should use a broadcaster in this way.
