Police figures indicate that there were 3,152 homicides during 2011, which include 642 suicides, and that 49,874 people appeared before the courts. As well as the murders and suicides 350 people drowned, 193 were electrocuted and 74 were victims of fire.
A total of 6,091 people were injured by gunshots, although that does not include those injured or killed by the police; those figures are not available.
During the same period the police confiscated 1,501 firearms and recovered 2,328 stolen cars and 1,875 motorcycles.
During last year 364 people disappeared, and the police resolved 261 cases and there were 44 kidnappings and all bar one were resolved.
Within the police ranks, 209 agents were recommended for dismissal, 725 were disciplined and 812 sent for trial, as reported in Hoy.
