According to Milciades Albert Fiorinelli, president of the Dominican Republic section of the American College of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Dominican adolescents who are sexually active are overusing the emergency contraceptive pill. Listin Diario quotes the doctor as saying that young women are using it too often and to induce abortions, which was not its purpose.
He warned that very frequent use can disrupt hormonal balance and the menstrual cycle and said it was being sold as if it were chocolate, in that girls often go and buy the pill after having a sexual encounter.
He said that he had carried out a survey of pharmacies and they had said the emergency contraceptive pill was sold mostly between the hours of 10pm and 5am, and even more at weekends. Some girls were using it two or three times a week, without realizing that it should only be used in an emergency, not as a substitute for regular contraception.
The doctor highlighted that if the girls were going to use it, the quicker the better, as it would not induce an abortion if the woman was already pregnant.
