More than 180,000 Dominicans go to the US Embassy each year to apply for a visa to travel to the United States, according to El Dia. However, it is not possible to establish how many visas were actually issued.

The cost of applying for the visa is US$140, around RD$5,500, not including the cost of the passport. This money is not refundable if the visa is denied.

The most popular visa requested is the B-1/B-2, which is the visitors' visa, for people who wish to visit temporarily for business or pleasure.

Dominicans continue to try to reach the United States illegally whether by yola, flying with false papers or stowing away on ships.

Last year the US immigration authorities canceled the visas of dozens of Dominicans who went to the US but were not admitted, despite being in possession of a visa. According to the immigration authorities at the Las Americas airport, cancellation of visas occurs when passengers have not used the documents correctly.

The US Embassy in the Dominican Republic recently stated that the Department of State had the authority to revoke a visa after having issued it.
