Twenty-five percent of young Dominicans of working age are unemployed, which the director of the Institute for Technical and Professional Training (Infotep), Idionis Perez, describes as a very high number. During his address at the opening of the X Forum of Central American and Dominican Republic Employment Directors, he said that the young people of the country showed unemployment rates higher than the national average, as well as under-employment rates. He stressed the fact that within the young population women made up the greater unemployed group, at 40% between the ages of 20 and 24.

The country's young population, according to Perez, currently totals 3.3 million, the second largest population bloc in the country after children. There are 2.6 million between the ages of 15 and 29 alone.

The official, who based his numbers on information from the Ministry of Labor, added that not only is the unemployment rate high, so is the number of young people looking for their first job. This rate has climbed over the past 10 years, from 44.66% to 58.43%. Also causing concern is the fact that 25% neither studies nor works. Some attention must be paid to this group, said Perez, because "they present a risk of entering into illegal activities or are in a process of disintegration from social cohesion, and therefore they should be looked after as prudently as possible."
