The Association of Hotels and Tourism (Asonahores) and the Association of Hotels La Romana-Bayahibe (AHRB) went public with their support of the government initiative to rebuild the Navy vigilance facilities in Saona Island as long as the latter meet environmental norms and serve to facilitate tourism in the area. Both organizations favored the decision of the Navy to secure US funding for the reconstruction of the navy station and dock facilities. In a press report, the organizations highlight that what will be built is not a navy base, but rather a watch tower with a small dock for two speedboats. The improvement of the facilities will help efforts to reduce people, weapon and drug smuggling in the area. The new facilities will also contribute to environmental conservation efforts supervised by the Ministry of Environment.
