In response to an Amnesty International report containing allegations of torture by police officers in the DR, Interior and Police Minister Jose Ramon Fadul and National Police chief Major General Jose Polanco Gomez have said that there is a campaign to discredit the country, using the pretext of supposed human rights violations by officers of the law.

Although they did not specify who they think is orchestrating the campaign, Fadul stated that it comes from international organizations that make false accusations with the aim of damaging the image of the National Police.

Fadul and Polanco Gomez said, "We know our weaknesses, but we have the political will to keep working with the strengthening the institution and the approval of a new legal framework."

They said that the National Police has embarked on a process of modernization and specialization. A purge of corrupt agents has resulted in the dismissal of more than 10,000 members in the last four years.

Fadul and Polanco Gomez said the Dominican population should not be surprised at this campaign, which was intended to damage the image of the police and the country in general.
