Sources have revealed to El Nacional that 1,714 active and retired military personnel and 79,000 civilians cannot leave the country as they have pending legal issues. Exit bans have been imposed in cases involving drug trafficking, people trafficking, money laundering, fraud, murder, motor accidents and nonpayment of child support.

The Public Prosecutor's office, by means of judges and prosecutors' petitions, issues exit bans, which are then sent to the General Migration Office. Three or four new ones are issued every day.

Many of those who cannot leave the country are already in jail.

In addition, more than 600 foreigners living in the Dominican Republic have been issued exit restrictions for various reasons.

Many people do not find out they have exit bans until they arrive at the airport to leave the country, when immigration officers inform them that they are not allowed to travel.
