Now in its third year, the Samana Las Terrenas 5k-10K marathon will be run on Sunday, 4 March, with runners starting at 8am from Punta Popy and the Las Terrenas-El Limon road. The circuit is certified by the International Associations of Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and has the backing of the Dominican Federation of Athletics Associations, Las Terrenas and national businesses. The marathon seeks to position Las Terrenas as a sport-tourism destination of choice, says Alma Arellano, project manager for race organizers LT Expert. Registrations opened on 1 February through the event's web page www.lasterrenasmarathon.com (http://www.lasterrenasmarathon.com) and at the registration centers on 6 February. In Las Terrenas, runners can register at the Century 21 Juan Perdomo office at Plaza Taina, in Santo Domingo at the offices of the Dominican Federation of Athletics Associations and at the Runner's Shop, and in Santiago on our website. "We believe this event is very important for the progress of Las Terrenas and its community, and we hope Las Terrenas 5K-10K will continue on and contribute to the path of developing a cycle of such activities in the area," says Melissa Prieto, managing director of El Portillo Beach Club and Spa in Las Terrenas, one of the event sponsors. "Last year, in the second edition of Las Terrenas 10K, 291 runners and 212 little ones took part in the children races. This has meant an exponential growth compared to the first edition, and the hope for 2012 is to have even a greater participation thanks to the invaluable support of community groups like the Liga Deportiva Los Terreneros, and local and national companies including El Portillo Beach Club and Spa, Induveca, Fairways Residence, VIP Realty Managers and Century 21 Juan Perdomo. Las Terrenas 5K-10K would not be possible without the important contribution of volunteers and the community", say the organizers. To join, please send an email to info@lasterrenasmarathon.com, or call 829 645 7278. All volunteers will be served a free breakfast before the race and receive the shirt "Volunteer, Las Terrenas 5K-10K."
