The report says that there was an increase of 121,977 vehicles in the Dominican Republic's vehicular inventory from 31 December 2010 to 31 December 2011, according to statistics from the Department of Taxes that issues the registrations. In 2011, 71,280 more motorcycles were in use, up 5.1%. SUVs were up 20,766 units, for an 8.2% increase. Government departments have purchase plans that facilitate the purchase of the luxury SUVs by government officials. SUVs are also popular because of their high road clearance in a country where roads are often in poor condition, or prone to frequent flooding due to inadequate drainage.
