EU will provide EUR73,000,000

The European Union is providing EUR73,000,000 towards projects and programs for the development of the Dominican Republic. The main target area for these programs is the area along the frontier with Haiti. According to Listin Diario, EU development commissioner Andris Piebalgs met with President Leonel Fernandez and Domingo Jimenez, the European Union funds coordinator, before announcing the donation. Piebalgs mentioned another cooperation agreement for EUR47.5 million, which will go towards projects on both sides of the border. These programs will allow for the repair of country roads, personnel training for customs workers and other programs aimed at improving living conditions for people on both sides of the border.
