While in the past this was mainly limited to plastic surgery cases, legal action against physicians is on the rise here. Hoy reports today Tuesday, 6 March that lawsuits for malpractice and negligence are up, and more than 100 suits have been filed at the Physicians Civil and Penal Insurance (Seguro Civil y Penal de los Medicos) in recent months. Hoy was not able to obtain a statement from the department director, but the reporter confirmed that dozens of cases have been filed, most in cases of surgery or invasive treatment.

Dr. Angel Veras of the legal advisory department of the Colegio Medico Dominicano (CMD), the leading medical association in the Dominican Republic, says that the doctor-patient relationship has acquired a new dimension. The fraternal relationship is a thing of the past, said Veras. He said that the areas where there are most lawsuits are gynecology-obstetrics, general surgery, plastic surgery and anesthesiology. He said that patients are becoming more aware of their rights and called for doctors to ensure that they document their patients' clinical history and follow the procedures.
