The murder rate of women in the Dominican Republic is a cause for national shame, and the National Statistics Office (ONE) reports that nearly half (46%) are murdered with handguns. In a report in El Caribe, ONE also seems to suggest that large numbers of people are armed, either legally or illegally, despite all the controls in the country. The statistics cover a five-year period - 2005-2010 - and record accidental and violent deaths. The numbers show 923 murders of women over the period, 46.2% of which were committed with firearms and 30% with knives. Psychiatrist Cesar Mella commented that "the use and abuse of firearms has been present in a considerable number of violent deaths, suicides and homicides..." The Ministry of the Interior and Police has over 156,000 pistols, 23,000 revolvers and 23,000 shotguns on its register.
