According to the organizers, a 48-hour strike called by The People's Popular Front (FALPO) and other organizations in San Francisco de Macoris for yesterday, Tueday March 6, was 95% successful. The protesters were demanding that the Government complete the construction of schools and communities that they promised to build two years ago and lower the high cost of the basic family basket of food, amongst other claims.
Raul Monegro, Falpo coordinator in San Francisco de Macoris, stated that the strike had been a success, as the main education, trade and transport activities all came to a halt.
Public and private schools were closed, as were government offices. In the morning of Tuesday March 6 there were no buses and very few cars on the road and the main shops in the town centre were also closed.
Monegro said that the public response in San Francisco de Macoris should provide the PLD and Leonel Fernandez with some food.
