Tomorrow is International Women's Day and according to the Center for Gender Studies at INTEC University, Dominican women are at a socio-economic disadvantage.

More women are unemployed, 21.5% as opposed to 10.1% of men, especially amongst the youngest age groups where almost 40% are lacking work.

According to the report, based on data from the Central Bank and the Ministry of Labor, of those who do work, 51% work in the informal sector, leading to a higher level of vulnerability, and more labor insecurity as they have lower levels of social and labor protection.

Dominican women receive 79% compared to men for the same work, according to the Social Indicators of the Dominican Republic (SISDOM), and have to study on average two years more to be able to enter the labor market.

According to the Intec study, the high percentage (62%) of women in universities has not translated into positions in business, or government posts, or traditionally male jobs like science and engineering.

In addition women receive little support, with the Ministry of Women only receiving 1.17% of the national budget in 2011. In congress there are only four women senators out of 32 and 38 deputies out of 183, far from the 33% which is laid down by the law, and only one out of every five senior government posts is occupied by a woman, including three female ministers, all in traditional female areas.

On the other hand, 60% of university students are women, and 66% of honor university students are women.
