Maestro Cares Foundation Co-Founders, global pop icon Marc Anthony and entrepreneur Henry Cardenas, announced today, Wednesday March 7 that the Foundation has received a land donation by the Dominican-based company Central Romana Corporation. The land will serve to house 43 boys currently living in the Orfanato Ninos de Cristo, an orphanage located in La Romana.

The Dominican orphanage will be the first to directly benefit from the Maestro Cares Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation established in November 2011 to support the housing and educational needs of orphaned and underprivileged children in developing Latin American countries

"The donation of this land is invaluable," said Anthony. "It will change the lives of these children and bring a great, positive energy to their environment. We would like to thank Central Romana Corporation for their enormous support and contribution."

According to the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), between 1990 and 2010, the poverty rate in Latin America dropped by 17 percentage points (from 48.4% to 31.4%). In 2007, 49.3% of children in the Dominican Republic lived in poverty, while 7.7% lived in extreme poverty.

In its flagship report, The State of the World's Children 2012, the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported that denials of children's rights to survival, health, nutrition, education and protection are widespread in urban environments, and although cities generally offer better options for schooling and recreation, disadvantaged children in urban settings - including children living in slums or working on the streets - are unlikely to enjoy those benefits.
