Cuban magazine Jit reports that Juan Francisco Puello, president of the Caribbean Baseball Confederation, is in Cuba to make preparations for the 2013 Caribbean Baseball Series. The confederation groups the winter baseball leagues of Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic that play the Caribbean Series in February every year. The championship has the backing of Major League Baseball. Next year the event is confirmed for Hermosillo, Mexico. Extraordinarily, South Korea has been invited to participate.

Cuba was a founder of the Caribbean Baseball Series in 1949. Jit Magazine recalls that while Cuba competed until 1960, winning seven of the 12 editions, it did not rejoin when the event was restarted in 1970 after an interruption from 1961-1969. The interruption coincided with the end of political dictatorships in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. In 1970 the event was resumed with three teams (DR, Puerto Rico and Venezuela), and Mexico joined in 1971. Since 1970, the DR is the country with the most wins (19), followed by Puerto Rico (10), Venezuela (7) and Mexico (6). The Dominican Republic (Escogido) won the 2012 Caribbean Series that was held in Santo Domingo.
