The Canadian Minister for Overseas Commerce, Edward Fast and the Director General of Mining of the Dominican Republic met during the International Convention of Prospectors and Developers of Canada, which ended in Toronto yesterday.

According to Listin Diario, Canadian ambassador in the DR Todd Kuiack said that the officials discussed the potential for future mining in the Dominican Republic, and the role that Canada has played in the development of the sector in the country. "The Dominican Republic is a very important country within the mining operations of Canada world-wide," said the ambassador. He said that Canada was one of the pioneers of large-scale mining when it began the Falconbridge operation in Bonao in 1971. Today with both Falconbridge and Barrick Gold Pueblo Viejo, the Canadian companies represent the bulk of the mining investments in the country. The ambassador stressed the good relationship between the two nations as well as the successful labor relations. He also noted that the Canadian Minister of Foreign Relations for the Americas, Diane Alblonczy, recently made the first bilateral visit to the country.
