The United States has criticized the persistence of corruption linked to illegal drug trafficking in the Dominican Republic, despite the increase in the number of seizures in 2011, according to the annual report on worldwide drug trafficking. According to the State Department report, the weight of the Dominican Republic in the flow of illegal drugs between South American and the markets in the United States and Europe is tightly bound to a supposed "endemic corruption."
"The application of the law in the country, the military and government officials are often accused of a series of corrupt acts, including drug trafficking, money laundering, extra-judicial executions, and other crimes," laments the State Department. Despite the greater number of seizures, the increase in drug related violence has been startling, as well as the expansion to rural areas and the use of maritime routes as the principal method of smuggling drugs inside as well as outside the country. The State Department argues for "the fight against endemic corruption, the restoration of public confidence in the agencies that apply the law and the judicial system." According to the report, 75.6% of the public believes that the judicial system has the highest levels of corruption.
