Victor Hernandez Rosario (Berto) has finally been caught after a long search that made him one of the country's most wanted men in recent years. Hernandez Rosario is accused of being the organizer of the illegal trip in a small boat that capsized in Samana Bay on 4 February with the loss of 56 of the 70 people who were on board and who were trying to reach Puerto Rico illegally in search of a better life.
The alleged trip organizer was arrested by police agents attached to the Central Criminal Intelligence Directorate (Dintel), the Naval Intelligence Division (M-2), authorities from the Attorney General's office, and the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Diario Libre says that the Police reported yesterday, Wednesday March 7, that Berto was caught in the city of La Vega. The Dominican Navy has detained another of the organizers of the illegal trip, identified as Cirilo Genao (El Chino) in connection with the case. He was arrested in the town of Pimentel in Duarte province.
A press release says that Berto had his center of operations in the Cibao region, especially in Nagua and San Francisco, where he hid to evade pursuit by the authorities. According to reports, Berto and several others survived by swimming to shore and going into the woods. The occupants of the fragile boat on the ill-fated trip paid between RD$20,000 and RD$30,000 to be taken to Puerto Rico.
