The president of the National Drug Control Department (DNCD) has announced that 11 new drug-policing dogs and their trainers have been certified, bringing the nationwide total to 42 in the DNCD canine unit. Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo attributed recent findings at the Las Americas, La Romana airports and the Multimodal Caucedo seaport to the canine unit. He said the country needed a team of 60 dogs to police the country's ports, as reported in Diario Libre.

The newly-trained drug dogs were donated by the Narcotics Affairs Section (NAS) of the US Embassy. The DNCD Canine Training Unit (K-9) is located at Km. 63 of the Duarte Highway. The dogs are trained to detect traces of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, crack and currency in luggage.
