View Full Version : Dominican judge sworn in to UN International Criminal Court

A Dominican lawyer, Olga Herrera Carbuccia was among the five new judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC) who were sworn in on 9 March following their election last December at the 10th session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the United Nations court. Herrera is one of two female judges in the 18-judge court. A fifth judge, Miriam Defensor of the Philippines will be sworn in at a later date.

Aside from Herrera, other judges who were sworn-in by the UN authorities were Anthony T. Carmona of Trinidad and Tobago, Chile Eboe-Osuji of Nigeria, Robert Fremr of Czech Republic and Howard Morrison of United Kingdom. They will serve nine-year terms at the court in The Hague, Netherlands that works for the international criminal justice system.

The International Criminal Court has a bench of 18 judges who are nationals of States Parties to the Rome Statute. Judges are chosen from among persons of high moral character, impartiality and integrity who possess the qualifications required in their respective countries for appointment to the highest judicial offices.
