The Ministry of Labor has removed 68 minors from the Rafey Refuse Landfill and the Hospedaje Yaque market area where they were subject to dangerous situations. Deputy minister Felix Hidalgo, the coordinator of the ministry's Child Labor Unit (UTI), headed an inspection focused on child labor as part of a drive to strengthen the application of the laws on children and labor. People in the wholesale market who employed children both directly and indirectly were issued with citations.

The presence of children in degrading conditions was established the Rafey Landfill. Felipe Rosario, the president of the Association of Divers (as garbage scavengers are frequently called) at the Rafey site told El Nuevo Diario reporters that last year three children were killed under the wheels of garbage trucks, and he said that he appreciated the presence of UTI inspectors at the site.

Minister of Labor Francisco Dominguez Brito has issued repeated calls to the citizenry to stop the employment of minors, especially in such dangerous activities. He guaranteed increased inspections and stricter penalties for offenders. He also said that parents would be given special social assistance in exchange for a commitment to keep their children in school and away from these places.
