The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) Roberto Rosario said yesterday that the political parties Partido Nacional de los Veteranos y Civiles (PNVC) and Partido Revolucionario Independiente (PRI) would lose their right to RD$19 million in public funding that will be distributed to approved political parties. The JCE had approved for participation 26 political parties.

In the case of both parties, the political alliances these made were annulled during a review by the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE). In the case of the PNVC, the president of the TSE issued a dissident vote, indicating that the decision by the court sets a negative precedent. In the decision, the court judges accepted the validity of the complaint of irregularities in the PRD party assembly where the alliance was decided, without requesting the proof.

In the case of the PRI, the party split between one section that allied with the PRD and another with the PLD.

As reported in Diario Libre, Rosario said that it respects the decisions taken by the Supreme Electoral Court.

Rosario also reported that the political parties have until 21 March to register the presidential and vice presidential candidates. The JCE will then have until 26 March to approve these. He said the 2012 election is expected to cost about RD$3.8 billion. Of the total, the political parties will receive RD$1.44 billion.
