Thousands of people commuting between Mao in Valverde province and other cities and towns in the northwest were left stranded by bus operators when 36 drivers' unions went on a 24-hour strike to protest the lack of repairs on the highway from Mao to Guayubin to Copey. The government had promised to begin the repairs some time ago. Father Rogelio Cruz will say Mass at the bridge in Cana Chapeton as part of the activities surrounding the strike. The strike affects transport services between Mao, Guayubin, Villa Vasquez, Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Castanuelas and other communities in this major agricultural area. Bananas, cattle and tobacco are the main economic activities.
